Over the past few months I have been working with a colleague on an ageing workforce project. What struck me again is that many organisatiions offer retirement planning seminars. While these are great and have a place again what many people tell me they want is the opportunity from their early 50's to rethink their career. Recently I sat with a manager who had come to the realisation they had gone as far as they could up the ladder in their organisation. Being in their early 50's one option was to disengage and cruise, yet this was not in line with their values. We spent time talking about what was important to them in their work, their accomplishments and what they wanted to be contributing 10 years out. They then identifed what they needed to be doing to be where they wanted to be in their early 60's.
I am convinced that one of the best things we can provide our ageing workforces is a career rethinking service - watch this space.
